He lives and works in Paris and New York, consciously keeping his true identity a secret. He places his black and white photographs all over the world as monumental posters on house walls, stairs and walls. In addition to the architecture of cities, cultural and contemporary historical contexts are always the subject of his works, whose emotional significance is expressed in the faces of the people JR photographs in close-up. Based on this idea, the artist has already realized major projects in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

JR’s main motivation is interaction with others. In his works he poses the question of freedom and identity and to what extent art can change the perception of people and their surroundings. But with his actions he also draws attention to grievances. Characteristic for JRs art are the stories he tells with his collages and his talent to bring together separate worlds. JR is a creator of relationships, a conductor who gives a face to anonymous existences or unrecognized and forgotten stories. For his ambitious visions to change the world, JR will receive the American TED Prize in 2011, which has already been awarded to Bill Clinton. My art does not change the world; but I hope it inspires people to change the way they look at the world and at people, says JR.

The exhibition at Museum Frieder Burda is curated by Patricia Kamp in close collaboration with JR. In photographs and videos by the artist, she presents both early and ongoing projects, thus opening up a retrospective view of his work and its development up to the present day.

IT ALL BEGAN WITH A FOUND CAMERA

JR begins his career as a sprayer. As a teenager he finds a camera in the Paris subway and begins to document his forays over roofs and in tunnels of Paris. In 2004 JR realized his first big project PORTRAIT OF A GENERATION. After riots in the Parisian suburbs, he posted his photos of grimacing youths in these very suburbs and in bourgeois areas of Paris. The images provoke passers-by by questioning the media’s portrayal of this generation. After the first posters are hastily removed by the city sanitation department, the city administration soon legalizes the project and proposes to JR to use public spaces near the city hall.

The exhibition at the Museum Frieder Burda also presents the project FACE 2 FACE. In 2007, Israelis and Palestinians with the same professions – for example, teachers, shopkeepers, sculptors – appeared in the Middle East in front of JR’s lens, laughing with tears, screaming or making faces. He posters the huge photos on house walls in the settlements on both sides of the border and even on the border installations themselves. The message is unmistakable: On the basis of their facial features, the enemy population groups cannot be distinguished.

For WOMEN ARE HEROES, JR 2008 dares to go to the Favela Morro da Providência in Rio de Janeiro, with a bold plan in his head. He wants to meet the inhabitants there and give a face to those who otherwise have to remain anonymous: the women of the favela. They are the first victims of drug-related crime, the weakest members of society, and yet their pillar. He covers the huts of the quarter with wall-high posters, black-and-white photos of eyes and faces, close-ups of the women. The project WOMEN ARE HEROES, about which he is also shooting a film of the same name, takes JR further to Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, India and Cambodia.

JR focuses on the older generation in the project THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY. They have experienced the great transformations of their city in the 20th century and yet remain largely unnoticed in the cityscape. After stops in Cartagena, Los Angeles, Havana and Shanghai, the project will take him to Berlin in early 2013. There, he will question the old people about their memories and place the photos of people scarred by life on the walls formed by history. The impressive faces and the folds of the people portrayed stand for the eventful history after the Second World War until the fall of the Wall.

INSIDE OUT – ANYONE CAN PARTICIPATE

The French artist JR (*1983) is one of the most innovative representatives of international contemporary art.
