The major summer exhibition 2011 at Museum Frieder Burda presents Neo Rauch (*1960), one of the most internationally renowned contemporary German artists. 36 major works of the last twenty years offer an impressive view of the Leipzig painter’s oeuvre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tour of the exhibition begins chronologically on the upper floor. Here you will find some of the artist’s earliest works, which the artist has put up for public discussion. These include Flut I and Flut II, two paintings from 1992\/1993 that belong to the Frieder Burda Collection and have an almost abstract appearance, and are a symbolic prelude to the flood of pictures that awaits the visitor in the exhibition. Figures that were initially difficult to recognize take on more and more form during a tour of the exhibition, appearing increasingly plastic, as if padded and stuffed, until the latest work, the recently completed bronze sculpture Nachhut (rearguard), which as a three-dimensional figure seems to have emerged from one of the paintings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who tries to recognize a coherent story from one of the pictures will quickly fail again at the next detail and have to start over again. It is the artist’s own experiences, dreams and stories that he processes in his works. The mood and emotions that these pictures transport and trigger, the viewer will similarly recognize in himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the pictures comic elements appear again and again. Speech bubbles, however, remain empty and provide no information about the plot or what is being said. Some of them turn into white stripes, as one knows them from dress-up dolls made of paper, and seem to want to fix individual objects in the picture like adhesive strips. Actually circular objects such as rolls of film (Vorf\u00fchrer, 1997) and (smoke) clouds take the form of a painter’s palette. Perhaps as an allusion to the artist’s name? Again and again one sees smoke rising from volcanoes. These mountains, symbolizing the uncontrollable, stand in landscapes that are very similar to the area around Leipzig where Neo Rauch grew up. He still lives and works here today, and it is here that he goes in search of motifs (Der Sucher, 1997). Visitors to the exhibition will discover recurring details or even a picture (Saum, 1993) within a picture (R\u00fcckzug, 2006) in the paintings. Certainly none of them is meaningless, just as certainly none of them got there by chance. However, for the viewer, they hardly make up the story to be told. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works shown in the Museum Frieder Burda come from German and European public and private collections. The exhibition is curated by Werner Spies, former director of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
