The works of art on display represent special points of interest and important phases in the development of the now internationally renowned private collection of sculptures, objects and especially paintings. Starting with the colorful paintings of German Expressionism, which already left a formative impression on Frieder Burda at home, over the years he has built up an important collection of 20th and 21st century art.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is on American Abstract Expressionism, the late work of Pablo Picasso and finally German painting with important groups of works by Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke and Georg Baselitz as well as Arnulf Rainer. Since the 1990s, another area of collection has been added: the art of young contemporary artists, some of whom are still at the beginning of their careers, but also of renowned painters such as Neo Rauch or photographers such as Axel H\u00fctte and Gregory Crewdson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition gives a concrete insight into the collector&#8217;s passion of the founder and patron Frieder Burda, and it will be interesting to see the stories told by his very personal selection: Thus, the first station and thus a first spark for Frieder Burda&#8217;s collection is the monochrome painting Concetto Spaziale (1967) by Lucio Fontana. He had seen it at the documenta in Kassel in 1968 and subsequently acquired it, thus creating an antipode to the narrative-expressive images in his father&#8217;s collection. From his father&#8217;s collection, he inherited a number of important paintings by the German Expressionists, including works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and August Macke. For the collector, the fascination of color and the emotional expressive qualities of painting are at the center of his interest in art.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Frieder Burda&#8217;s lifelines can be identified by the example of selected photographs: His interest in American Abstract Expressionism was awakened during his frequent visits to the United States in the 1960s and 1970s and later led to purchases such as Mark Rothko&#8217;s painting No. 36 (Black Stripe) (1958), paintings by De Kooning, Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock. Frieder Burda&#8217;s closeness to France is notably represented by several paintings by the late Picasso in the collection that the artist painted in Mougins in the south of France, the place where Frieder Burda also stayed on many occasions. The art of young German artists is the last station in the collection so far and is linked to the planning of a museum in his home country. The lifelines therefore converge in Baden-Baden.
