Party – A Dialogue with Frieder Burda

Gerhard Richter

27. 5. — 29. 10. 2028

Gerhard Richter's iconic painting Party (1963) serves as emblematic inspiration for an exhibition that chronicles a period of artistic and emotional renewal, whilst also highlighting the friendship between Gerhard Richter and Frieder Burda. Frieder Burda's enthusiasm for the great painter's work played a decisive role in the history of his collection. It resulted in over 30 acquisitions that trace the development of Richter's multifaceted œuvre from the early 1960s into the 21st century.

The large-scale exhibition Gerhard Richter: Party – A Dialogue with Frieder Burda places this outstanding collection in a dynamic dialogue with major loans from over 20 international museums and private collections. It also highlights the significance of Richter's artistic friendships with colleagues such as Günther Uecker, Blinky Palermo, and Sigmar Polke, who had a decisive influence on the development of his early work. The exhibition demonstrates the consistency with which Richter, since his move to West Germany in 1961, created a uniquely independent body of work that constantly oscillated between figuration and abstraction, while repeatedly questioning the representational function of art itself.

The exhibition is curated by a renowned expert on Gerhard Richter, the art historian Helmut Friedel.
