FROM ERRÓ TO SIGMAR POLKE

Europe in Pop Fever

Although the term “Pop” is primarily associated with American postwar painting, numerous European avant-garde artists were exploring the same themes at the very same time. They, too, examined the relationship between art and consumerism, drew upon the visual language of fashion, advertising, and entertainment, or questioned the changing roles of women between pin-up and emancipation. The exhibition at Museum Frieder Burda focuses on the work of European painters who responded to the innovations of Pop Art to re-examine the relationship between art and modern leisure society. Against the backdrop of a lively transatlantic exchange, their vibrant works are deliberately juxtaposed with selected paintings from American Pop Art. In total, this opulent survey brings together more than 70 works by over 20 artists.
